The Future of RiftWire
August 19, 2011 (Friday) @ 8:50 pm | RiftWire Commentary

When I started RiftWire nearly 7 months ago, there weren’t a lot of active Rift fan sites.

Several of the earliest fan sites had lost momentum in the months leading up to the game’s launch. I felt that we could find a niche not just in reporting the news and pulling the best information from the Rift forums, as we have done on the EQ2 site with EQ2Wire, but also in thoughtful Commentary, Guides, and helping people get the most of Rift.

During the 6 months since Rift’s launch, the Rift Community has exploded with the launch of some 70 new Rift-based fan sites. This is not to mention the larger MMO hub sites like Zam which have also turned their attention and resources towards Rift. There are, at least count, 91 websites dedicated to Rift plus the official websites and forums. Keep in mind that there are presently less than a dozen EQ2-specific fan sites, and most are topical (crafting, adornments/augments, achievement points, etc.).

I would like to take a moment to thank Starseeker for the tremendous job she has done over the last 7 months in single-handedly running RiftWire. She has combed the forums, listened to interviews, even attended conventions, all while keeping an ear to the ground so she can keep you, our readers, up-to-date. Starseeker and I started talking about what RiftWire would be months before the site launched and so I had no doubt she’d do fantastic work.

As she has undoubtedly found out, it is difficult to stand out in such a crowded field of sites all covering the same game, and more sites seem to launch by the week. I still get link exchange requests from promising new Rift sites. I have a growing feeling that there are probably more websites than are entirely necessary to fully document such a young MMO.

I am now faced with the prospect of finding someone new to write, produce, collect, and inform on a daily basis. Everyone seems to have their own Rift blog. Or the alternative, discontinuing the site.

So I ask you…

Should RiftWire carry forth? Who should write it?

Yes, please continue on with this site. Besides the main Rift website, RiftWire is my main source for Rift information. I just love how everything is all put together in one neat and tidy place. Good luck Starseeker. You will be missed.

Plz keep this site up. Star did a fantastic job. I would be more than willing to help (part-time or whatever) with the daily info since I have almost 1000 posts on the Trion boards.

I love the wire sites for their “readability” and I visit rift-wire on a regular basis, would be great if it could be continued and to Starseeker: you’ve done an awesome job keeping us all up with new information :-)

I also still read eq2wire, although I’ve canceled my accounts and went to rift… thats how great the wire sites are ;-)

Please stay open! Every day I check Eq2wire and Riftwire. Someone out there with blogging talent must want the job! Please step up. =)

I’d say keep the site alive.

One difference from Rift wire and EQ2 wire is that SOE loves drama, so you end up with many more people posting on EQ2 wire to moan. The lack of moaning here doesn’t mean the site isn’t popular.

Wow! Well maybe i should post this on the EQ2 wire but goes with what you are mentioning Feldon, even less competition for EQ2 wire now.

Kris sent me an email yesterday telling me about her departure from Rift-Wire… I would really encourage you to keep it open…as for finding a new person to write it, I will definitely put the word out on the show this week about Rift-Wire needing a new writer. If this is something you want me to do, get in touch and give me some specifics about the qualifications and requirements, etc, as well as the “application process”. You can send an email to pvrshow@gmail.com

Hope you can get this sorted, as I’ve really grown used to checking Rift-Wire regularly, and would hate to lose it :)

Thanks guys :) I really enjoyed writing for the site. I will miss it much, I do hope the site continues on as well, since I love the idea of having a one stop shop for news

I’d like to see this live on as well as it is a great sister site to EQ2Wire, which I loved during my (very long) time in EQ2. Honestly, only two Rift sites I check are here and Rift Junkies. I’d like to see this one bounce back and develop as I see it as more of a place for casuals/everyone, where as Rift Junkies tends to lean towards hard core raiders.

If you need someone willing to step up and help with posting news, feel free to email me. Long opinion pieces I may not have an abundance of, but I’m definitely willing to help out!

I personally use Riftwire for all of my Rift news. I really appreciated the work Starseeker did and I would prefer the site remained.

EQ2 wire is probably my favorite gaming site, and when I saw there was another one for Rift I added that to my rotations as well. I fear is this site goes away, so will all my Rift news. Sure, I could go somewhere else, but I’m stupidly loyal to ths one. :P

PS – what other Wire sites are there? I already know EQ2 wire and this one. Are there others? Is there a master hub I should be going to?

any news about riftwire? so what sites are you guys reading in the meantime? is there any comparable out there?

@mescal. I’d like to know too. I keep coming here, but I guess we’ve gotten our answer with it being almost a month without updates. Still, would be nice to hear from Feldon on his official decision and about where else he recommends we go.

Yep. I offered to help, but no reply from Feldon. Guess this site is dead now sadly. (
